Start Menu Customization

Start Menu in Windows 7 can be customized according to user‟s need. All the items in Start menu can either be set as display link or set as menu. Apart from it there are several more things to configure. Steps are here: 1. Right click on Start Button or taskbar (Super bar) of Windows 7 2. Click on properties. 3. Select the tab „Start Menu‟. This will bring you Customize & Privacy options.

 4. Select Customize button there.

5. You can select the behavior of items in Start Menu. If you want them to behave as link, Menu or Icon. 

6. Behavior of items like my computer, Downloads etc. can be set. 

7. Also you can choose default settings if you wish to undo all the changes you have done. 

8. Click OK to apply the changes.

How to add a shortcut to your Start menu | Shortcut

Being able to add shortcuts to your desktop, you can also add a shortcut on your Start menu. Shortcuts to your favorite files with their programs - appear together.
Add a shortcut to your Start menu
1. Your My Documents folder and sub folders to browse for the file you want to create a shortcut.
2. Start button and drag the file can hold for about a second.
3. When the Start menu opens, drag the file to the location where you want to add.
4. Drop the file where you want the shortcut, and a shortcut icon appears.

o change the text  of start button firstly you have to download resource hacker tm for this.

1. Make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows.

2. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe

3. Expand String table by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033.

4. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38.

5. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

6. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted and replace the start with your name.

7.Click on compile and save it as file.exe or any other name but with .exe extension.

8. Go to start and in run ,type regedit and press enter.

9.Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

10. In the Right pane, double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box.

11. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

12. Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system.

13. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.
